How to successfully cut down on alcohol in 2025

If you have jumped onto the Dry Jan challenge - congratulations! Taking a break from alcohol while working in the yachting industry is no small feat. The party culture of the yachting industry makes this commitment even more admirable.

If your goal is to reduce alcohol consumption in 2025, starting with dry months or weeks is a powerful first step. Moderation can be tricky— we all know one drink is never really one drink 😉, but if you get yourself used to socialising without alcohol moderation will become second nature.

So, how can you make Dry January truly productive?

1. Be Curious and Reflect 💭

Notice what challenges you most:

  • Is it peer pressure or fear of missing out at social events?

    • Remember if someone is upset about your choices, they are probably insecure about their own drinking habits.

  • When do you feel most comfortable saying no to a drink?

    • Surround yourself with supportive crew members & choose activities that aren’t centred around drinking.

The more you understand your triggers, the better equipped you’ll be to manage them.

2. Redefine Social Activities 🥂

Seek out experiences that aren’t centered around alcohol. Here are some ideas:

  • Organise a painting or pottery class with your crew

  • Plan a workout class followed by a healthy brunch

  • Enjoy a beach day or outdoor adventure

  • Experiment with mocktail recipes

  • Treat yourself to a new restaurant (you’re saving money and calories so why not treat yourself!)

3. Embrace Slips as Learning Opportunities 🌱

If you slip up, don’t throw the entire month away. Use it as a chance to reflect:

  • What led to the choice?

  • How can you prepare differently next time?

  • What emotions did I feel before I picked up that drink?
